Meeks, acts as a light of peace and hope for the greater Chicago region. Salem’s religion inspires its congregants to take action by showing true compassion, genuine care, and genuine concern for individuals from all walks of life and backgrounds.

Salvation Army Salem’s major objective as a “Church Without Walls” is to offer spiritual, social, and communal outreach that uplifts and assists people in their spiritual walk with Christ.

The founder and senior pastor of Salem Baptist Church of Chicago, Pastor James T. Meeks, has been recognized as one of the nation’s fastest-growing megachurches, according to the Church Growth Index. It has more than 15,000 members, making Salem the biggest African-American church in the state of Illinois.

Pastor Meeks campaigned for and was elected to the position of Illinois state senator in 2002. With his victory, he became the state’s first independent lawmaker elected to the Illinois Senate. He spent three terms in the House of Representatives, with his primary concentration on educational fairness.

Over the course of his tenure in government, he rose through the ranks to hold positions of leadership, including head of the education committee and joint chairman of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus, among others.

He has also shown himself to us via his only son, Jesus Christ, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified (died on the cross), and has been buried. Where will he come to judge the living and the dead? For me, there are many things that I believe in: the Holy Spirit, the local and worldwide church, the communion of saints, the forgiving of sins, the resurrection of the body, and eternal life. Amen.
